Young clay makers
A teacher led children's session focusing on learning and developing skills with clay
Course information
A teacher led children's pottery session focusing on learning and developing skills with clay including hand building and wheel throwing. This 1.5 hour session will allow children that have previous experience or have attended a one to one session with me at the studio, to build on their knowledge of working with clay. Projects will be developed in conjunction with students as work progresses. These sessions are designed for ongoing learning for keen young potters and are not stand alone sessions. Students can develop a breadth of knowledge and skills such as slab building, coiling, collaring, developing form enabling them to develop more complex vessel shapes and also learn how to finish their pieces using texture and colour. The sessions aim is to learn and practice, building on their fine motor skills to gain knowledge and confidence. As students continue in their sessions then they will begin to practice more complex forms and advance to exploring trimming and glazing techniques used to finish a piece. Minimum participant age is 12 years old and the maximum age 16 years old. What’s included? 1 hour of practical making and learning time in addition to 30 minutes of prep and H&S at the start and end of the session. 1kg of stoneware clay, a small selection of glazes/underglazes, and firing up to a max height/ length of 20cm. Anything over this will incur a small additional charge for glaze and firing dependant on size. Please note that the layering of glazes is not permitted unless a test tile has been completed to test the glaze interaction, this will save loss of work and damage to the kiln. Students might not produce keepable pieces in each session and some pieces will require multiple sessions to complete (such as trimming, altering form and glazing) students may choose one piece from each session to have fired and glazed. All tools, equipment, materials, and firing, as described, are included. You will need to come armed with a plastic storage box to keep work in a workable condition between sessions. You will be provided with an apron, but it is advisable that you wear clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy! Please read the terms and conditions by following the link at the bottom of this page before booking.
