Course information
Discover the art of ceramics through personalised one-to-one tuition in wheel throwing, designed for both complete beginners and those looking to build on existing skills. These tailored sessions provide a supportive and hands-on environment where you can learn at your own pace, develop confidence on the wheel, and explore your creativity with clay. Whether you're trying pottery for the first time or refining your technique, each lesson is adapted to suit your individual goals, ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience. You’ll start by learning how to centre clay and form cylinders—key foundational skills in wheel throwing—with plenty of hands-on practice. You’ll then be introduced to shaping simple forms, helping you build confidence on the wheel. The session includes 1.5 hours of guided making and learning time, followed by studio clean-up while following good health and safety practices. Each stage is clearly demonstrated, and you’re encouraged to ask questions throughout. All tools, materials, equipment, and firing are included. Aprons are provided, but it’s best to wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy. Please note that long nails or nail extensions can make working on the wheel more challenging. Participants must be aged 16 or over. You can select two of your favourite pieces to be glazed and fired, with the option to finish additional items for £10 each, payable at the end of the session. Your finished work will be ready to collect in around 4–6 weeks. This allows time for careful drying, firing, and glazing. Delivery can be arranged for an additional fee if needed. If you’d like to continue, further classes can help you refine your throwing skills, create more complex shapes, and explore decorative techniques such as underglaze, sgraffito, and glaze layering.
