Family wheel throwing taster session
Try wheel throwing, learn core techniques, and create your own pots in a fun beginner session.
Course information
Designed for complete beginners to experience wheel throwing as a family, it’s a great way to try the wheel in a relaxed, supportive environment. This session is for a maximum of 4, 2 adults (16+) and 2 children (10-16). The studio has 4 wheels so this is the maximum number of participants. Younger children may need additional assistance from the teacher or a parent. You’ll start by learning how to centre clay and form cylinders—key foundational skills in wheel throwing—with plenty of hands-on practice. You’ll then be introduced to shaping simple forms, helping you build confidence on the wheel. The session includes 1.5 hours of guided making and learning time, followed by studio clean-up while following good health and safety practices. Each stage is clearly demonstrated, and you’re encouraged to ask questions throughout. All tools, materials, equipment, and firing are included. Aprons are provided, but it’s best to wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy. Please note that long nails or nail extensions can make working on the wheel more challenging. Minimum age for this session is 10 years old. Allowable alterations to the group booking; one adult and three children. You can select two of your favourite pieces to be glazed and fired, with the option to finish additional items for £10 each, payable at the end of the session. Your finished work will be ready to collect in around 4–6 weeks. This allows time for careful drying, firing, and glazing. Delivery can be arranged for an additional fee if needed. If you’d like to continue, further classes can help you refine your throwing skills, create more complex shapes, and explore decorative techniques such as underglaze, sgraffito, and glaze layering. Please read the terms and conditions before booking. Important: Pottery wheels may not be suitable for individuals with pacemakers due to potential interference from electric motors. Please consult your doctor before attending.
