Course information

This complete art technician CPD session will cover the basics of studio management, glaze application and hand building techniques for non specialists, those new to teaching a broad art curriculum or those new to being an Art technician in the Primary/ Secondary school setting. What is covered? Clay reclaim Health and safety when working with clay in the classroom setting Basic glazing techniques - dipping and brushing, specific gravity and viscosity - hands on practice Kiln best practice - loading and firing, Orton cones Working with air dry clay - where applicable Working with earthenware/stoneware clay Basic hand building techniques such as slab building, coiling and pinch pots Applying glazes and colour Vocabulary Myth busting ceramics! Please come armed with your questions, if you have very specific questions regarding a particular aspect or piece of equipment please email this to me in advance. Knowing your kiln make and model as well as the type of kiln controller would be preferable, in addition to knowing the types of glazes used in your setting - underglazes, low/mid/high firing ect PLEASE NOTE THIS INFORMATION ON THE BOOKING FORM. What is included? Detailed handout on the topics covered, with some hands on learning with glazes - bisque ware will be provided for you but glazed work is to be taken back to school to be fired, putting your learning into practice. In addition to some small clay work to develop an understanding of basic ceramic techniques, some work will also be decorated through the application of underglazes. There is a 30min slot for a quick lunch break. Please bring lunch with you as there are not always options available on site. This service is held at my studio, additional teachers can be added at the cost of £150pp. Alternatively this session can be held at your school to enable a wider range of non specialist teachers to take part, this is particularly useful in the Primary school setting - please email for this option to be discussed.
