Course information

Join us for a relaxed, hands-on workshop where you'll learn how to sculpt a charming Highland cow from clay. Guided step by step, you'll begin by creating a simple pinch pot to form the body before bringing your cow to life with a head, horns, and distinctive features. Using a combination of coiling techniques and an extruder, you'll create the Highland cow's iconic coat and fringe. You'll also have the opportunity to add your own unique details and decorative elements, giving your cow plenty of personality and character. To enhance its rustic charm, the body will be left in its natural clay finish for a soft, organic look. You'll also have the option to add touches of underglaze to highlight key features and personalise your piece. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some previous clay experience, this workshop offers a fun and creative introduction to clay hand building. Come along, get creative, and leave with a handmade Highland cow that's uniquely yours. What's Included? 2 hours of practical making, decorating and learning time, followed by time to clean up and follow best health and safety practice in a studio setting. Step-by-step guidance throughout the hand building process, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions as you learn. All tools, equipment, materials and firing costs included. Use of a studio apron during the session. We recommend wearing clothing that you don't mind getting a little muddy. After the Workshop Your finished Highland cow will be ready for collection approximately 4 weeks after your class. Clay must be completely bone dry before it can be fired, and colder weather can affect drying times. The drying and firing process will be fully explained during your workshop. Where Can It Take You? If you've enjoyed your first experience with clay, why not continue your creative journey? Join us for other guided workshops, book a taster session, or enrol on one of our longer six-part courses to develop your skills in hand building or wheel throwing.
