Course information
This beginner’s course is designed to guide you through the essential foundations of wheel throwing, with a focus on three core skills: centring clay, pulling walls, and building confidence at the wheel. We’ll start with centring, often the most challenging but rewarding part of the process. Learning to control the clay as it spins beneath your hands will help you develop both physical coordination and a sense of rhythm. From there, you’ll move on to pulling walls—transforming a simple lump of clay into functional forms like cylinders and bowls by learning how to lift and shape the clay evenly. By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation in wheel throwing and begin to develop the confidence to continue honing your skills, creating pieces that are uniquely your own. Price is per person and the number of participants can be selected at checkout. What’s included? 5x. 2 hour classes of practical making and learning time followed by time to clean up. Sessions are 6-8pm on the following dates: Wednesday 15th April centring clay and pulling walls Wednesday 22nd April wheel practice and thinking about form Wednesday 29th April practice and completion of work Wednesday 6th May turning work ready for firing Class break to allow for firing of work before glazing Wednesday 20th May April glazing All tools, equipment, materials, and firing as described below are included. You will be provided with an apron, but it is advisable that you wear clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy! You can choose up to THREE of your favourite pieces to be fired and glazed. Additional pieces can be glazed and fired at a cost of £10 an item, payable before the end of the course. Work is ready for collection approximately 4 weeks after your last class. Where can it take you? With further lessons, you can go on to develop your throwing skills; developing more complex vessel shapes and also learn how to turn and finish the bases of your thrown pots. If desired, you can even explore how to incorporate decoration such as underglaze, sgraffito and glaze layering to further enhance your pieces. Please read the terms and conditions by following the link at the bottom of this page before booking. Unfortunately as these are consecutive sessions any missed sessions will not be repeated.
